Cranial Osteopathy Baby London

Cranial osteopathy can
help your baby to relax

Babies can’t tell us what they’re going through but an experienced cranial osteopath learns to listen with their hands.

I have an MSc in Paediatric Osteopathy and I run the Osteopathic Centre for Children’s service for premature babies in Barnet Hospital.

I offer cranial osteopathy for babies in Hackney, East London. Here’s what you can expect:

Expert insight

I will help you make sense of your baby’s symptoms and dig deeper to find the root of the problem.

Personalised care

I will listen to your story to understand what your baby has been through and work with you to figure out what they need.

The human touch

I will gently support your baby to relax so they can find their way back to their natural state of balance.

What is baby cranial osteopathy?

Cranial osteopathy is a gentle treatment that promotes health through therapeutic touch. It is the manual therapy treatment of choice for babies because it is such a gentle approach. Despite the name, its principles and techniques can be applied to the whole body.

How does cranial osteopathy for babies work?

Much of the tension we experience in everyday life comes from the adaptations our bodies have made to things that have happened to us in the past. Birth is one of the most challenging events we experience in our lifetimes.

Babies have an amazing ability to compensate and most of the issues they face will resolve on their own in time. However, as the tension in our bodies mounts up, it can start to compromise their capacity for self-maintenance and repair.

Many babies can benefit from some support to resolve the minor stresses and strains that often occur as a result. Addressing any unresolved strains early can help to avoid problems later on.

It does feel weird to be treated in such a non-invasive, gentle and comprehensive way. It’s weird not to feel the manipulation as it happens. But it’s wonderful to realize the problems go away little by little.

What do cranial osteopaths do for babies?

Cranial osteopaths are experts at identifying unresolved tension from factors during pregnancy or birth and gently supporting babies to let go of it so their bodies can get back to working as nature intended. They apply a modern scientific understanding of developmental anatomy, physiology and psychology to the use of therapeutic touch.

During the treatment, a cranial osteopath will use their hands to identify areas of tension or imbalance in the baby’s body and try to make sense of where it’s come from, what impact it’s having and what kind of support it needs to resolve. They will then hold different parts of your baby’s body to support them to rebalance. The treatment is very gentle and most babies seem to find it relaxing.

What conditions can baby cranial osteopathy help with?

Osteopathy is a patient-centred rather than disease-centred approach. This means that osteopaths focus on the tension and imbalances that are compromising the body’s capacity for self-maintenance and repair, rather than the medical condition per se.

As a result, osteopathy can help your baby to respond more effectively and support them to adapt, whatever challenges they may be facing with their health. For example, a large randomised controlled trial of osteopathic treatment on preterm babies found that it significantly reduced their length of stay in hospital.

Why choose a cranial osteopath for your baby?

Osteopathy is a complete system of manual medicine with its own distinctive way of looking at things. Osteopaths are highly qualified, NHS recognised Allied Health Professionals with their own government appointed regulator, the General Osteopathic Council. They are trained to diagnose and treat independently and know when to refer you to your GP or other specialists. 93% of patients rate their experience of osteopathy as ‘very good’ and 96% have confidence in their osteopath’s treatment and advice.

Every paediatric osteopath in the UK is a registered osteopath. However, babies are not just small adults. Specific knowledge and skills are needed to assess and treat them safely and effectively. Choosing an experienced cranial osteopath with specialist paediatric training will give you the confidence your baby is in safe hands.

BOst, MSc, PgCert, FSCCO, FHEA

I believe that every baby can benefit from osteopathic care. I’ve been practising cranial osteopathy for babies in London since 2004 and I have an MSc in Paediatric Osteopathy. I enjoy working with people from all walks of life.

Between 2004 and 2013, I studied, worked and taught at the Osteopathic Centre for Children. The OCC is an international centre of excellence for children’s osteopathy and I recently rejoined the team to run its osteopathy service at Barnet Hospital. In the NICU at Barnet, I work with premature babies to help them recover from the challenges associated with being born early.

As a faculty member of the Sutherland Cranial College of Osteopathy, I teach osteopaths who are training to specialise in cranial osteopathy. In addition to the SCCO’s ten module training pathway, I completed James Jealous’ renowned nine year Biodynamics of Osteopathy programme in 2021.

Giving something back to my profession has always been a passion of mine. I am a former President of the Institute of Osteopathy and served as Secretary for the Osteopathic Alliance from its inception. On behalf of the Osteopathic Development Group, I led a multi-stakeholder project to develop Guidance for osteopaths who work with children and young people (2020)
