Osteopathy can help you
adapt as your baby grows

Pregnancy and childbirth are unlike anything your body has been through before. An experienced pregnancy osteopath can help you to adapt.

From 2004 to 2013, I studied and taught advanced pregnancy and postpartum care at the Osteopathic Centre for Children. I take pride in supporting women on their journey into motherhood.

I offer pregnancy osteopathy in Hackney, East London. Here’s what you can expect:

Expert insight

I will look beyond your symptoms to see the bigger picture and dig deeper to get to the root of the problem.

Personalised care

I will listen to your story to understand what’s really important to you and work with you to make a plan that’s right for you.

The human touch

I will help you let go of the tension you no longer need and support you to regain your natural state of balance.

What is a pregnancy osteopath?

Osteopathy is a complete system of manual medicine with its own distinctive way of looking at things. It is a safe, effective treatment for back pain, neck pain and many other common conditions of pregnancy.

Unlike massage therapists and other alternative practitioners, osteopaths are highly qualified, NHS recognised Allied Health Professionals with their own government appointed regulator, the General Osteopathic Council. They are trained to diagnose and treat independently and know when to refer you to your GP or other specialists.

An experienced pregnancy osteopath can help you to adapt as your baby grows and support you to prepare for giving birth. In addition, seeing an osteopath postpartum can aid your recovery afterwards. 93% of patients rate their experience of osteopathy as ‘very good’ and 96% have confidence in their osteopath’s treatment and advice.

How does pregnancy osteopathy work?

Much of the tension we experience in everyday life comes from the adaptations our bodies have made to things that have happened to us in the past. For example, old accidents, injuries and illnesses often leave us with unresolved tension and strains. During pregnancy, the added stress of adapting to the growth of the baby can tip things out of balance. Back pain, sciatica and many other common conditions of pregnancy can be a sign your body is struggling to adapt.

Our bodies have an amazing ability to compensate and many pregnancy symptoms will resolve on their own in time. However, as the tension mounts up, it can start to compromise the body’s capacity for self-maintenance and repair. A pregnancy osteopath can help you to address this early so you can avoid problems later on. They are experts at identifying unresolved tension and supporting you to let go of it. This frees your body to adapt as your baby grows and helps it get back to normal after giving birth.

It does feel weird to be treated in such a non-invasive, gentle and comprehensive way. It’s weird not to feel the manipulation as it happens. But it’s wonderful to realise the problems go away little by little.

What does a pregnancy osteopath do?

Osteopaths apply a modern scientific understanding of anatomy, physiology and psychology to the use of therapeutic touch. During the treatment, they will use their hands to identify areas of tension or imbalance in your body and try to make sense of where it came from, what impact it’s having and what kind of support it needs to resolve. They will hold different parts of your body to support them to rebalance. The treatment is very gentle and most people find it deeply relaxing.

What conditions can a pregnancy osteopath help with?

An osteopath can help you stay healthy during pregnancy and make sure your body’s ready for giving birth. Seeing an osteopath postpartum can help you get back on track afterwards and support your baby to get the best start in life.

Osteopathy is a patient-centered rather than disease-centered approach. This means that an osteopath will focus on the tension and imbalances that are compromising your body’s capacity for self-maintenance and repair, rather than the condition per se. As a result, osteopathy can help you to adapt, whatever challenges you may be facing with your health.

Women commonly seek support with a wide range of pregnancy and postpartum symptoms, including:

Back pain & sciatica
Neck pain & headaches
Digestive & circulatory problems
Inability to relax
Other aches & pains

Why choose a specialist pregnancy osteopath?

The postural, physiological and psychological changes women go through during pregnancy and childbirth are unlike anything else they will experience in their lifetime. Providing safe, effective care during this unique period requires specialist knowledge and skills.

Whatever stage you’re at in your journey into motherhood, choosing an experienced pregnancy osteopath with advanced training in the care of pregnant women and children will give you the confidence you are in safe hands.

Ben Katz

BOst, MSc, PgCert, FSCCO, FHEA

I believe that osteopathy can make a meaningful difference to every woman’s experience of pregnancy. I’ve been practising pregnancy osteopathy in London since 2004 and I enjoy working with women from all walks of life.

From 2004 to 2013, I studied, worked and taught at the Osteopathic Centre for Children. The OCC is an international centre of excellence for the osteopathic care of pregnant women and children. I recently rejoined the team to run the OCC’s osteopathy service for premature babies at Barnet Hospital.

Giving something back has always been important to me. I am a past President of the Institute of Osteopathy and advised the Advertising Standards Authority about osteopaths’ marketing claims for pregnant women and children. On behalf of the Osteopathic Development Group, I led development of guidance for osteopaths who work with children.
